SOCIAL WRITERS MEET......Talay Riley
We talk to the voice behind the electro-pop track 'Humanoid', Talay Riley. We ask Talay about his collaborations with Chipmunk, touring with N-Dubz, and Taio Cruz.
What made you want to pursue a career in the music industry?
Watching MC Hammer on the TV when I was young and just seeing people’s videos like Missy Elliot, she always had great videos in my opinion. Watching artists like Michael Jackson and I thought I just wanted to be that, or to do what they were doing. The artists were like superheroes on my TV and I wanted to be that.
Who were your musical inspirations when you were growing up?
MJ, MC Hammer, Marvin Gaye….there was that girl group Cleopatra, I really liked them, I used to wake up in the morning and sing to their song.
How did the collaborations which Chipmunk come about?
I worked with these guys, for six years before all of this came about, called Parker and James who produced ‘Oopsy Daisy’, we had done loads of songs and ‘Oopsy Daisy’ was one of them. Chipmunk knows one of them and he came to the studio one time and said “What do you guys have?” and ‘Oopsy Daisy’ was one of the songs that got played to him and he loved it.
It was sitting there for ages and her took it and changed it up a bit, put down his verses and took the song to number one. That’s how it came about and from then me and Chipmunk stayed in contact and then we worked with Harmony and did ‘Look For Me’ and then other songs on the album ‘Beast’ and ‘Lose My Life’ with N-Dubz came as well so that was quite cool

SOCIAL WRITERS MEET.......Kano
Currently on tour with the Gorillaz, Kano took a break to sit down with us and talk about the tour, his new single and being compared to JLS' JB.
Let’s start by talking about your SB.TV exclusive KA:47 video – we're absolutely loving it! Especially the line about JLS, do you really get compared to JB that much?
[Laughs] Is that his name? Yeah I have a bit, I can’t even lie. Yeah quite a bit. To the point that the next person..
You wanna run her over?!
Yeah! But it’s all cool, it’s all jokes.
Your new single 'Upside' is due for release this month, what was the inspiration behind the track?
Well the inspiration behind the track was, well, musically it was trying to make something that was very epic, but also keep people guessing. Like the way the song starts, you would never know that I was going to come in that punchy and that energetic, and then it breaks down again. So it was kind of those fast moments but there were cool moments just to really keep it moving, that was the idea for doing it. And lyrically, it was just..I’m still trying to work that bit out!
How long did it take you to come up with the track?
It all happened in one day. As tracks do, you develop them over weeks, sometimes even months, until you get to that end product so you think"this is okay now". The particular person I worked with on it, Craigy, he’s a guy that, like we will do a session, and I’ll say, "Yeah I’m happy with it" and he’ll be like "Okay, I’ll email I to you so when you get home it’s there", and then I’ll get home and it’s not there and I’ll think I’ve got problems, then in the morning I’ll get the email like "Yeah I just had an idea when you left so I just changed it and now it sounds like this." And it’s like oh my gosh! So that track was developed quite quickly.
What made you choose to feature Michelle Breeze?
The guy that produced it, Craigy, he has got a band called Why Why Peaches with Michelle so I’ve worked with them both together on a song before and when were talking about people to sing the hook, he wrote the hook, I was like let’s get Michelle, I love her voice, so we got her in and she just did it.
Your musical sound is very diverse as can be seen through some of your collaborations. Would you still consider yourself a Grime artist?
It’s something that I never really have, even from day one I never really said I was a Grime artist. I didn’t really feel that I was, I didn’t feel that I needed to say that. My music and my volume of work when that word came around didn’t only represent that. It definitely did represent that, it definitely did represent hip hop, dancehall, jungle, all those influences and it definitely represented the youth culture. But I just never was happy with just being called that. I don’t think artists ever are, they just want to be known as ‘I make music man’ without putting a title on it, but people have to. So I don’t really see myself that way. It doesn’t bother me though, if people say that, like it used to. I just didn’t like it, no one likes it because we didn’t make it up. We created a new music along with all the other people and producers that evolved the game and the scene and the music from Garage to what it now is. I don’t really put myself in a genre.

SOCIALWRITERS MEET........Nathan
After taking some time out of the game, UK sensation Nathan is back with a hot new track 'Caught Me Slippin’', just in time for summer. We sat down with a jet-lagged Nathan to talk about his new single, his take on the UK music scene and just why he’d choose South London over ATL any day!
You’ve been M.I.A from the music scene for a while now – what was the reason behind that?
Basically, I went to America for a little while to expand my network. I released the first album ‘Masterpiece’ and decided that I wanted to release it in different territories so we released in Japan and it did really well, sold like 80,000. I was really happy with branching out. When I was releasing 'Come Into My Room' and 'Do Without My Love' everyone was like, you should try and go to America as well.
I went to America and just met a lot of new people, new producers, and started working with people like the guy from Wallstreet who produced the first single, Swizz Beats, Angela Hunte, who wrote 'Empire State Of Mind', it’s just been wicked. So, people were like "what, aren’t you doing music anymore?" They just think beause I haven’t been releasing anything...but there was a lot of behind the scenes work and focusing on this new album and now it’s coming together.
Tell us about the new single
'Caught Me Slippin’' is just a fun song! It was just fun that I had in the studio. At the time when I was recording it, last year November or October, when I was in the studio with Wallstreet he played me the beat and I wasn’t even trying to make a single or anything like that, he just played me the music and I just did what I felt. I wrote it in like 10 minutes, recorded it in like an hour and it was just a fun vibe to go along with the music.
Was it your choice to feature Flo Rida on the track?
Yeah, the way the Flo Rida feature happened was probably about 3 weeks after I recorded the song. I came back over here because Flo Rida had a show in Bristol and they wanted me to support him. We did the show, and we were at the after party and I was so happy with this new song that I did I was like "let me play it in the club", to see how it went. And like everyone was feeling it, it just dropped like one of the songs that was already in. So I was talking to Flo Rida and he was saying "I’m feeling that song" and I was like "you know what would be dope, is if you could feature on it?" We hooked it up that same day. Probably about three or four days after that we came down to Brixton....We brought him to the ends! Yeah we went to the Dairy Studios, we recorded it there, had a little party, you know, had to make sure he had a good vibe, so we brought in some Patron and that, got some girls in.
The video looks amazing! It’s nice to see you dancing for once! But are you worried that you may be compared to other artists such as Chris Brown or Jason Derulo?
I don’t worry about it, I don’t really mind. All of them are good at what they do. With the dancing thing I do like to dance but, I don’t really want to be seen as like...hmm, it’s hard to explain. With music, for me each song is different. So, I don’t want to be that guy that sings and dances to every song because I can sing and just because I can dance. Some songs, it’s about dancing. Some songs make you want to dance; 'Caught Me Slippin’' is that type of song. Then there’s other songs where it’s not like that. It’s just about being in the vibe and moving a certain way so for me, it depends on the song.
