NEWS: Gil Scott Heron Dies at 62

The revolutionary spoken word artist, hailed as the 'Godfather of Rap', Gil Scott Heron died in the early hours of Friday morning, aged 62.

The poet who was HIV positive, fell ill on a recent trip to Europe and died in the early hours of Friday, however the cause of his death is yet to be reported.

Heron is widely regarded as laying the foundations for the Hip Hop culture as a whole.

Gil fused poetry, politics, blues and jazz and came to prominence in the 1970's with the critically acclaimed, 'The Revolution Will Not Be Televised, serving as a striking critique of the role of race within media and advertising sectors.

If Scott Heron's name means nothing to you then your opinion on Hip Hop culture as is rendered void, just like that. RIP.

Eminem's latest album, 'Recovery', is set to sell more than 600,000 copies by Sunday in the biggest sales week of the year so far.

'Recovery' is set to be Em's sixth straight #1 album and #1 debut - the 'Slim Shady LP', which was the rappers major-label debut album, is his only album that didn't get a #1.

This means that Drake's 'Thank Me Later' will be knocked off the top spot.

R.I.P J Dilla

J Dilla was the most honorable producer that ever lived.

Throughout the week, fans world wide have been paying tribute to the sublime talent that was James Dewitt Yancey (aka Dilla Dawg!), on what would of been his 36th birthday on the 7th February.

However; never one to conform, I was a little reluctant to jump on the bandwagon as it wasn't until his death that he began to receive the recognition that he undoubtedly deserved. Yet, political views aside, the powers within could not condone my stubbornness and as such, we at Social Writers have created a mixture of our favourite J Dilla tracks as well as a filmed tribute by rapper Common, in memory of the incredibly talented producer.

He is the producers producer.

R.I.P Dilla

Thanks to pinboard Blog for the Common Tribute.

NEW MUSIC [AUDIO + DOWNLOAD]: Drake - 'Comeback Season 2' Mixtape

So whilst we wait for Drake to drop his debut album, he's gone and done another mixtape, 'Comeback Season 2'. Once again Drake delivers some smooth relatable lyrics which will not disappoint his fans.

But one can only wonder, with all these mixtapes, is Drake over-saturating his presence?
These mixtapes are definitely building up the hype to his much anticipated debut album set to be released this year....let's just hope he lives up to his fans' expectations.

Barclaycard Mercury Prize 2009 Winner - Speech Debelle

South Londoner Speech Debelle has won the Barclaycard Mercury Prize 2009 for her album, 'Speech Therapy'. 'Speech Therapy' was the only hip hop entry this year and beat 11 other albums from the likes of La Roux, Kasabian and Florence + The Machine.

Hardly anybody knew about Speech before she was nominated for the Mercury the Prize, now she'll be one of the handful of Urban artists that press and music industry will now pay a lot of attention to!

Congrats to Speech Debelle, who's now the second Urban artist to win a Mercury Prize, alongside Dizzee Rascal who won in 2003 for his album 'Boy In Da Corner'.

Instrumental Carnival Bank Holiday Special!

If there was ever an instrumental carnival bank holiday special to get excited about, this one was it by far. Hosted at the Westbury in Kilburn, bank holiday Sunday saw the return of yet another Uprock and Pancake Gallery collaboration and like always it was a night served with the freshest music, drizzled with a euphoric vibe.

If you're a true Hip hop fiend or just like to be in the company of good music, you most definitely would have come across the Uprock sound system, but merge that together with a guest US DJ like the highly respected DJ Waajeed from the Hip hop trio,The Platnum Pied Pipers and expect to be marvelled.

DJ Wajeed who has also lent a helping hand to the extraordinaire that was J Dilla and Slum Village, gave the London crowd a taste of how they do it back home in Detroit and by 12.00am, judging by the response of the amped crowd, they had no complaints. Escorting the tribe of Westbury-ites back in time through music, the Detroit native had everyone high, not on the high grade, but on the raw, unapologetic, ingenious that is Hip hop where classics such as 'F*ck The Police' were welcomed and chanted in unison.

Celebrating their first year anniversary, the Pancake Gallery crew had DJ Switch from the Netherlands represent them in true Dutch style, and the humble guy that I had once glimpsed sitting in the corner, transformed into an uncontrollable music ruffian, spinning out 80's and 90's classics ranging from Cameo to Michael Jackson to my favourite B.I.G, having no mercy whatsoever on my sore dancing feet.

Although Om'mas from the creative duo Sa Ra was on the bill to DJ,he unfortunately was unable to make it. But my brief disappointment was short lived as the night overall was simply dope!
